Ryedale District Council outlines council tax strategy

COUNCIL tax bills in Ryedale could rise for the first time in three years in 2013/14 as finance bosses begin laying the ground to deal with the impact of more Government funding cuts.

Ryedale District Council has been drawing up a Medium Term Financial Plan – a strategy for balancing its books – while, along with other local authorities, it waits to hear how much its grant from Westminster will be for next year.

A report by corporate director Paul Cresswell has recommended putting forward proposals for a 2.5 per cent increase in council tax in 2013/14, together with potential increases in fees and charges and possible service cuts.

However, no decisions will be taken until February once the grant settlement figure is known.

The council said earlier this year that a seven per cent drop in its grant – equating to £225,000 - would mean having to find about £600,000 in “efficiencies and cuts”.

Mr Cresswell’s report said the grant cut could now be about ten per cent, which would be a “good outcome” and one of the lowest reductions to district councils, but it was “quite probable” it would be higher.

The full Band D council tax charge for a Ryedale property is £1,500.85, but only £176.72 of this goes to the district council, with the rest going to North Yorkshire County Council and the fire and police services. A one per cent increase in council tax across all properties would net the district council about £38,000.

Ryedale District Council offices, Ryedale House, here in Malton are currently having £100,000 of our hard earned cash being spent/wasted on a upgrade to the entrance and Foyer said to being done so as to be more pleasing to the "customer", no such thing as a customer to these places. Got to be desperate to ever go. The Foyer, in it's old state, was more than acceptable. Wouldn't the £100,000 have better been used to help towards covering the shortfalls. This waste of our money is downright disgusting. These people should realise that we the public pay their wages and should be shown more respect. I can look out of my window and watch the progress of this unnecessary waste of our money. It is noticeable that all the contractors involved are from far afield no locals involved Again a lack of respect for locals. The new inword "Pleb" comes to mind. Have seen a number of interpretations of the word, probably the most appropriate on this occasion "Someone who acts as though he/she as visited GP and had brain exchanged for small cucumber"

Happie Chappie,

Indeed, this is a culture of people at RDC constantly wasting our money, then demanding more. Petulance and ignorance of the highest order. Not long since they blew tens of thousands on their own FREE for them car park, while at the same time blowing tens of thousands trying to sell off the only decent car park of the people in Malton (Wentworth Street). Which of course now appears to be completely flawed and likely to never happen... but they only have one option for recovering their financial blunders and that is to rob the people of Ryedale. Then there's the long drawn out battle with 'The Estate'. It doesn't matter what people thing about Fitzwilliams Estate, but the bitter and twisted way RDC have conducted themselves during this ridiculous battle is just another example of incompetence. Add just these recent incompetent incidents together and you have more than the amount RDC are seeking to increase Council Tax. This has nothing at all to do with central funding and everything to do with incompetence. In reality, much more could be saved if all the dead weight at RDC were fired!
