Four injured as car mounts pavement in Thirsk

FOUR people including a four-year-old girl were injured when a car mounted a pavement and hit them outside a shop.

The collision happened in Thirsk Market Place at 9.15am on Friday when a red car struck the group outside the Co-operative store. They all suffered minor injuries, but none needed hospital treatment.

The driver was also uninjured, PC Chris Dundon, of Thirsk Police, praised staff at the shop who helped the group.

He said: “They reacted very quickly to come to the aid of the pedestrians, who thankfully did not sustain any serious injuries.”

So an idiot who cycles on a footpath and injures a pensioner over, triggers a banner headline on page 1. This driver who injured four pedestrians, with the capacity to kill and maim, is relegated to
three column inches on page 3.

Let's have equal treatment for both in future, please.

The difference being the driver of the car stopped and was identified Paul, the main point of the "cyclist headline" was to trace him as he fled the scene leaving his elderly victim injured.

There's a difference between an accident, which this appears to have been, and a deliberate act of selfish and dangerous stupidity. The cyclist on the pavement was guilty of the latter (as are so many like him). As Pete points out, he also ran away from the consequences of his actions.

Try taking a stroll along, say, Low Petergate and Kings Square early in the morning and clocking all the cars/vans/lorries illegally parked on double yellow lines/the footpath. Then watch out for the motorists who mount the other footpath to squeeze past them. Sure, some cyclists commit acts of selfish and dangerous stupidity - I witnessed an incredible example just this afternoon, as it happens. But there are numerous motorists exhibiting the very same behaviour in York every single day without attracting any notice from the Press. Parking where - for good reasons - they're not permitted to and thereby endangering other road users. Running red lights (saw that today as well, yet again, at Bootham Bar). Overtaking cyclists when there's not enough room to do it safely. Manoeuvring without bothering to indicate.

It's also worth noting that, as usual in these cases, the wording of the report is "the car mounted the pavement", as if it's Herbie or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and took off all by itself, dragging the passive individual in the driver's seat along with it.

You can also add for motorists, is ignoring road closed signs, and then having to be rescued from the floods.

I watched yet again two cyclists going the wrong way down a one way street in York last Friday. What is more they won't get out of the way of oncoming vehicles and get quite aggrieved when forced on to the pavement as there are parked cars on one side and not enough room for me and a bike to pass! At least motorists have to pass a driving test, tax a vehicle and pay further tax on the fuel - but any fool can pick up a bike for the less than the cost of a tank of fuel and risk life and limb. Looking forward to darker nights and scores of unlit cyclists again.

About time we had some sensible comments rather than the usual attempts to direct hatredt at cyclists just because a few are morons.

I also note how there are very few comments on here when compared to the cyclists that was on the pavement. Even if there is yet to be an instance where a pavement cyclist hits somebody but stops to help, I bet my bottom dollar it gets much more column space (probably even front page) and certainly more comments than this article has done.
