Strong support for North York Moors potash mine

PLANS for a new potash mine on the North York Moors have received strong support from local people and business and tourism groups, according to the firm behind the scheme.

York Potash, which has held six public exhibitions at Sneaton, Sleights, Hawsker, Flylingthorpe and Whitby, showing more than 800 people detailed plans for the new mine, will host two final public exhibitions in Cloughton and Scarborough this week.

Analysis of feedback forms received so far has indicated that 89.3 per cent of people were supportive of proposals with 10.1 per cent undecided and less than one per cent against the new mine, it said.

The York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership and the Leeds, York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce expressed strong support for the proposals and the economic growth that the York Potash Project could bring to the wider region.

The mine is expected to create 100 jobs and a planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of the year.
