Motorists drive on as road collapses near Newton-on-Ouse
8:38am Thursday 27th September 2012 in News
A FLOODED country road between Newton-on-Ouse and Linton-on-Ouse, near Easingwold, began collapsing – but some motorists and cyclists still tried to use it.
North Yorkshire County Council said the edge of the road near a bridge over a beck subsided after being flooded by the River Ouse.
A spokeswoman said the road was closed, but some motorists and two cyclists decided to try to get through.
“This is very dangerous and we would urge people not to attempt to use this road.”
She said it would not be possible to assess the extent of the damage to the road until the waters subsided.
Pam Fowler, who lives at Newton and works at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, said her journey to and from work normally took a few minutes but took three-quarters of an hour yesterday after she had to take a very lengthy detour.
She said any lengthy closure of the road would cause great inconvenience for many of the hundreds of people who worked at the base.
