Distraction thefts alert

POLICE are urging people to be on their guard following a series of distraction break-ins and thefts in the area.

On Saturday morning, a jewellery box containing items including a gold wedding ring and bracelet were stolen from a home in Pickering.

Officers say they are keen to speak to a white male, aged about 17 or 18, 5ft 6in tall and with short fair hair, who was wearing a collared shirt, possibly checked, and fawn-coloured trousers, who was seen in the area.

Two mobile phones were also stolen from businesses in Malton last Tuesday lunchtime by two people, who are described as Eastern European, who were asking for information.

Last week in Malton, an elderly woman’s home was entered by intruders who searched through cupboards. Three men were later arrested and released on bail.

Sgt John Clayton, of Malton Police, said anyone who was unsure about a caller should contact police by phoning 101.

“Distraction burglars target the more vulnerable residents by luring them out of the house to talk about the their garden or other issues while an accomplice is in the house,” he said.

“People should be cautious and always check the ID of a cold caller and if they are not happy they should not let them in.”

Sgt Clayton said people should always keep doors and windows secure, especially back doors.

“A caller may come to the front while someone else goes round to the back,” he added.
