Update for Whitby bridge
8:50am Wednesday 26th September 2012 in News
THE £250,000 upgrade of a North Yorkshire town’s historic swing bridge is to begin next Monday.
The scheme, which is being carried out by North Yorkshire County Council, is part of a £4 million scheme, including a Park&Ride facility, designed to cut congestion in Whitby.
The bridge, built in 1909, will stay in operation for most of the ten-week work period, which includes replacing timber fenders, creating new footways. installing new navigation lights, waterproofing cables and repainting the entire structure.
The maintenance scheme is one element of a two-year project designed to prevent the bridge breaking down in future, and its computerised technology has already been updated to allow faults to be tracked and located.
