Inquiry continues into Whitby sex attack

THE investigation into a serious sexual assault on a young girl at a North Yorkshire seaside town is continuing.

The girl told North Yorkshire Police officers she was seriously sexually assaulted by an unknown man in an alleyway between New Quay Road and Baxtergate in Whitby between 8.30pm and 9pm on Wednesday, September 12.

Specially trained police officers are continuing to support the girl, and detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Keith Ruff, leading the investigation, said: “This has naturally been a very traumatic time for the girl and we are doing everything we can to give her the necessary care and support.

“I realise this incident has caused a lot of concern and I want to reassure residents and visitors to the town that North Yorkshire Police is conducting a very thorough inquiry into this matter.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555111.
