First-rate jazz on bill at Scarborough festival

The tenth Scarborough Jazz Festival runs from September 28 to 30, and features acclaimed reeds player, composer, arranger and band leader Alan Barnes.

Singer Claire Martin tops the bill on Saturday backed by guitarist Jim Mullen, saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock and the Gareth Williams Trio. Earlier Tim Garland will play a BBC commissioned piece with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before performing a set with his own quartet. In the afternoon, Matt Wates and Jay Phelps will lead their bands in the Scarborough Spa Grand Hall.

The vibrant Sector7 – four vocalists and a piano trio – kick off Sunday evening followed by Ken Mathieson’s Classic Orchestra, with Alan Barnes, playing the music of Benny Carter. The contrasting bands of Rhythmica, the Jenny Malloy Trio (Bach Reloaded) and Just East entertain in the afternoon.
