Whitby swing bridge shut for overnight repairs

REPAIR work on Whitby ’s historic swing bridge begins this week.

The structure was built in 1909 and responsibility for its maintenance has now fallen to North Yorkshire County Council, with a £250,000 upgrade being carried over nine week.

Computerised technology used to run the bridge will be updated so faults can be tracked and located to prevent problems and speed up repairs. The council has said this means that if the bridge fails in the future, engineers will immediately know which spares are needed.

The bridge will be closed to traffic overnight tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow, 9.30pm-6am, although it will remain open to pedestrians.
