AN 86-year-old pedestrian was killed last night in an accident involving a lorry near Thirsk.
North Yorkshire Police said the accident happened at approximately 8.40pm on the southbound carriageway of the A19, close the to junction for the A168 and the York turn off, and officers were now appealing for a vital witness to come forward.
“The collision involved an 86-year-old local man who was walking along the carriageway and an orange lorry,” said a spokesman.
“The man, who was the pedestrian, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. We are not yet in a position to release his identity. The driver of the lorry was shaken but otherwise uninjured.”
Traffic Constable Steven Wood, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, said: “I understand that at the time of the collision a car was overtaking the orange lorry.
“Although they were not involved in the collision it is possible that the driver may have vital information that could help the investigation. I ask them to contact the police as soon as possible.
“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw either the man walking along the A19 or the orange lorry prior to the collision and ask that they contact the police as soon as possible.”
* Anyone who can assist with the investigation is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Steven Wood. Alternatively information can be emailed to Steven.Wood161@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
