Historic Whitby bridge closed for repairs

REPAIR work on a North Yorkshire town’s historic swing bridge will begin next week.

The Whitby structure was built in 1909 and responsibility for its maintenance has now fallen to North Yorkshire County Council, with a £250,000 upgrade being carried out over a nine-week period Computerised technology used to run the bridge is to be updated so faults can be tracked and located to prevent problems and speed up repairs.

The start of the work will mean the bridge being closed to traffic overnight on Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30pm to 6am, although it will remain open to pedestrians.
