Council tip fire at Scalby

FIRE crews were called to a large fire to the rear of the council tip in Burniston Road, Scalby, near Scarborough.

The incident, at about 9pm on Tuesday, involved about 600 bales of straw which were on fire 20 metres away from a wooden building which contained 450 piglets.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire FIre Service said crews allowed the straw to burn out, and protected the wooden building with a curtain of water.
