Transport ‘poverty’ misery in North Yorkshire

PEOPLE living in a North Yorkshire district are being more badly hit by “transport poverty” than those anywhere else in the county, a new report has claimed.
Transport charity Sustrans has warned increasing numbers of people in rural areas face being cut off from the rest of society because of rising fuel costs and poor access to public transport.
Its findings said 32 per cent of Hambleton residents were at serious risk of being unable to access essential goods and services, while in Ryedale the figure was 31 per cent.
The research by Sustrans involved looking at how many people lived more than a mile from a bus stop or railway station and would need to walk more than an hour to shops and other services, as well as low-income households in different parts of Yorkshire.
