Family inspires half marathon challenge

A Malton business owner is taking part in the Great North Run for the first time this weekend – just six months after taking up running.

Chloe Rendall, who recently opened Captain Barney’s play centre in Railway Street, with her husband Julian, joined Pickering Running Club’s beginners’ group in April after deciding she needed to improve her fitness.

“Thanks to their support I managed to do a 6k run at Castle Howard in June,” she said.

“A close family member had breast cancer a couple of years ago and so I decided to carry on with what I had learnt as part of the running group and give the Great North Run a go to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.”

Chloe said that when she first started running it had been “hard and painful”.

“I came on really quickly and can now run eight miles, so I am hoping to complete the run and come out alive,” she said.

“I want to raise as much as I can for the charity which I really believe in and which certainly helped my relative.”

Chloe said her husband and three children would be joining her on the day to cheer her along the 13.5-mile route.

“My daughter Freya has also bought a big jar of lollipops with her pocket money to support me which we are selling to raise further funds,” she added.
