THE opening date for the A64 Brambling Fields junction has been put back again because of last week’s rain.

Initially due to open before the start of the holiday period in June, the date has been revised throughout the summer with hopes that the road would hope by the end of August.

However, the Highways Agency has said this week that rain over the bank holiday weekend, and continuing into the week, had again delayed works which started in January.

A spokesperson said: “Once the ground conditions at the site improve, we will work to open the junction as soon as possible. This will be dependent on a period of reasonable weather that allows the site to dry out so the final stages of work can take place.”

Malton business owner Denys Townsend, who has been campaigning for alterations to the traffic light system at Butcher Corner in Malton to help reduce congestion, said everyone was frustrated by the lack of action.

“I have done a couple of petitions and everybody is of the same mind that something needs to be done,” he said.

“A delivery driver took one and a half hours last week to get from Norton to our shop in Market Place. Perhaps everyone should get together one Friday afternoon and march up Castlegate in protest – I cannot understand why nothing is being done about this locally.”

Coun Paul Andrews , a member of Malton Town Council and Ryedale District Council, questioned the long-term financial costs to the area.

“The contract was for £3.6million although the council has a budget of £5.5million and it is now in to £4.4million and the longer this goes on the more money the contractors get out of this,” he said, “The whole situation is dreadful and disgraceful and I feel sorry for traders in Norton, plus the development in Malton and Norton that is going to be need to pay for this scheme is going to cause more problems than it will solve.”

Coun Brian Maud, who raised questions about the scheme at Ryedale District Council’s July meeting, said it was very disappointing that the opening had been delayed further.

“It was originally supposed to be closed for 24 weeks and that has now reached 36 weeks and while it will be a great relief when it finally does open I do question how much difference it is going to make,” he said.

“I don’t think it has been taken into account the effect this scheme has had on traders never mind the financial cost – it has been an absolute disaster.”

it is so clear ref the delays from norton to malton,,, CCTV system, police driving through, members of council driving through and yet the council sit and do nothing!!! I regularly turn left at rail crossing, go past ASDA then left to york road ind estate and then come back down york road to butchers corner and across the lights towards pickering, in half the time it as taken to que in the traffic up castlegate.. but council still sit on their backsides and do nothing about re phasing the lights,, its not difficult for a councillor to try it is it??

err trying different routes and finding out for themselves that the lights do need rephasing.. its funny how they manage to get a guy in from peek traffic managment when a cycle race is on ect..

and what was said??? when i spoke to someone on phone i was basically told that there was nothing that could be done and that the a64 junction would be open end of July, early august...

I was on the work area a few days ago and if its fully open by mid october it will be a shock...

I was informed that a study of the traffic flows around Butcher Corner was undertaken and that it was considered that amending the traffic light settings would be counterproductive. I was also informed that the imlementation of changes to the traffic light phasing was not a case of flicking a few switches. Apparently a new circuit board would be required.

so a temporary, generator type system, similar to road works wasmnt looked at. or just even local diversions,,

what I find funny is if you turn left out of Welham rd, or even turning right off castle gate into Welham rd,, majority of drivers will put them selves and others at risk on the crossing, by not allowing the traffic to turn,,i,ve lost count the amount of time the lights have started to flas whilst someone is still on the rails lines.. and yet you follow these same drivers upto marrisons and they will give way to any traffic coming out of morrisons??

on the subject of morrisons a guy who works there came up with an idea of allowing access into there carpark via their delivery area, it would have needed a little bit of work but put this against the delays and the pollution at butchers corner surely this idea may have warranted some looking at?

I spoke to the contractor about three weeks ago about better local diversions and apparently they cannot put a diversion over a route that is unable to take ALL traffic. For example, most of the congestion occurred during the summer holidays when traffic coming from East Yorkshire wanted to go to Flamingoland, Pickering, Whitby and other northern Ryedale attractions. I queried why a diversion couldn’t be recommended to use the Settrington/ Scagglethorpe route to the A64 from Beverly Road. There is a weight restriction on the above route, therefore it's not an option. It does seem silly when a simple sign saying ‘Not suitable for HGV’ would suffice.

what aload of crap from the contractor,,, a simple 7.5tonne limit would have sorted it..

there are numerous ways that some of the traffic could either be diverted, or restricted, one point last week the army driver training lot from leconfield were coming through castlegate, 8 trucks with trailers, why?? just adding to the congestion, pollution and wasting tax payers money on fuel for what..
