Malton ’S Castle Garden is one of a record number of UK sites that has received a Green Flag Award – the national award for public and community parks and green spaces.

Di Keal, founder member of the Derwent Riverside Project group that manages the Castle Garden, said: “This is the second year that the Castle Garden has been awarded this fantastic accolade and we are absolutely delighted that all the hard work that the committee has put in over the years has been recognised by Green Flag.

“We have always felt that Malton and Norton ’s ‘secret garden’ is a huge asset for the towns and to have this officially recognised is great news.”

The record number of 1,424 sites receiving an award this year ensures that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces so important for health and leisure activities.

Communities Minister, Andrew Stunell said: “Great parks and green spaces have a huge impact on local communities, providing places to play and relax as well as bringing generations together in a variety of ways. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages, and the Green Flag Award scheme seeks to help raise the standards of them all. The many excellent stories coming from the scheme prove what communities and volunteers can achieve by working together with professionals in our green spaces.”

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme manager, added: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped to create these fantastic places.

“I must also thank all this year’s 800-plus volunteer judges for their magnificent efforts in assessing an astounding number of applications.”

Anyone who would like to help maintain the Castle Garden is welcome to go to a series of volunteer days that are taking place on the first Friday and the third Sunday of the month. For further details phone Trish Leach on 01904 763514.
