Mobile phone app launched for moors walking trails

AN INNOVATIVE mobile phone guide to walking trails has been launched by the North York Moors National Park Authority.

Visitors can download the Lime and Ice app onto their iPhones and follow trails taking them to the famous White Horse of Kilburn, Lake Gormire, and stretches of the Cleveland Way.

The app has been developed to help people get the most out of their visit to the area around Sutton Bank National Park Centre. It is the first app to be launched by the National Park Authority and more are planned for the future.

Jennifer Smith, Lime and Ice project officer for the National Park Authority, said: “The countryside around Sutton Bank is one of Britain’s best-kept secrets.

“There are ruined abbeys and castles, ancient monuments, teetering crags, sweeping views, quaint villages, famous landmarks and rolling hills waiting to be discovered. The app contains four walking trails to help people explore some of these incredible places.”

The first trail starts in Kilburn, and takes walkers through rolling fields and woods to Scotch Corner Chapel. The second trail is the classic walk from Sutton Bank to the White Horse of Kilburn and back along the escarpment edge. The third features one of Yorkshire’s scenic treasures, Lake Gormire and the final trail goes around the grounds of the Sutton Bank National Park Centre and features a fun quiz.

In May the Lime and Ice exhibition at the Sutton Bank centre was officially opened by comedian and geology enthusiast, Hugh Dennis. The exhibition reveals the story behind the creation of the dramatic landscape at Sutton Bank and how it has shaped people’s lives. The app is available as a free download from iTunes by searching for Lime and Ice and can be used on iPhones, iPod touches and iPads.

Free WiFi is available at the centre to help people download the app before their journey begins and two iPod touches can be borrowed from the centre.
