A STUDENT from North Yorkshire carried the torch for a A-level success in York.

Jamie Green, 18, of Malton , who studied at Bootham School in York, gained A* grades in German and French and A grades in history and English literature.

In June, Jamie, who has cerebral palsy, carried the Olympic torch through Scarborough, an honour given in recognition of his role as ambassador for Whizz-Kids, a charity which provides disabled children with equipment and support.

Jamie, who last autumn spoke at both the Labour and Conservative party conferences, said carrying the torch was an experience he would never forget, and said he was thrilled with his exam results.

He said: “It was such a surprise. I didn’t expect to do that well. It’s a great way to end a great two years at Bootham.”

Jamie now plans to study modern languages at Durham University.

Bootham pupils Marcus Balmer, Scott Donohue, Owen Duffery, Christopher Ellery, Robert Hart, Rosanna Hildyard, Marcus Hutchinson, Laura Jeffrey, Brian Lee, Melissa Millson and Kady Yam joined Jamie in gaining at least four straight A/A*s.

Head teacher Jonathan Taylor, said: “Congratulations to all our students who have not only studied with focus and diligence, but have involved themselves in a huge number of interests and activities. From music to charity work and political debate – from sporting excellence to drama and art, Bootham has been enriched by their time here and we wish them well for the future.”
