IT might not be the most leisurely way to spend a Sunday morning - but it didn’t stop 1,000 people taking on a swimming, biking and running challenge at one of North Yorkshire’s most famous landmarks yesterday.

Competitors of all ages from across the UK headed to the region for the Markel Castle Howard Triathlon, the third event in a series of five races at castles and stately homes throughout the summer which are the only European opportunity for amateurs to test themselves against Olympic hopefuls.

Relay teams had the chance to win a £5,000 charity prize donated by main sponsor Markel UK, with York Against Cancer being the local charity partner for the triathlon.

Its races included swims of between 400m and 1,500m in the estate’s lake, cycling either 20km or 40km, and a four, eight or ten-kilometre run around the grounds.
