Six arrested in raid at Seamer Horse Fair

SIX people have been arrested after a huge haul of suspected counterfeit goods was seized by police and trading standards officers at Seamer Horse Fair.

Officers swooped on three vans as they left the site of the fair, near Scarborough, on Sunday afternoon, according to North Yorkshire County Council. Six people were arrested and a large amount of suspected fake products were seized, including “hundreds of items of clothing”.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for Trading Standards, confirmed the goods had been seized and all were suspected to be fake.

He said: “At a time when the country is facing recession and small businesses are struggling to survive, it is more important than ever that we take steps with our partners to ensure local, legitimate businesses don’t lose trade to rogue traders, including counterfeiters.

“For this reason we will continue to work effectively with our partners, including North Yorkshire Police, to protect their interests as well as unsuspecting consumers who are buying items in good faith, believing them to be genuine.”

The arrested people include two men from London, aged 38 and 40, two women from London, aged 34 and 47 and two people from Essex, a man, 75, and a woman, 69.
