Scarborough Borough Council ‘should stay in its current HQ’

LEADING councillors in a North Yorkshire town have said its council should stay at its current town hall despite millions of pounds of improvements being needed.

Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet has opted for the authority to remain at the existing Grade II-listed building, following public anger over a potential move to a new civic base.

A review will be staged to look at how improvements could be carried out, including whether 1960s annexes could be demolished, but staying at the town hall could throw a question mark over whether £3 million from the Homes and Communities Agency to redevelop the site and the nearby Futurist Theatre will still be available.

The council has looked at moving to a new base at the former Scarborough Building Society headquarters on the edge of the town, but these plans were met with huge public opposition. The cabinet’s proposals will go before a full council meeting tomorrow, when a final decision is expected to be made.
