TRIBUTES have been paid by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, to the Rev Prebendary John Douglas Andrews who has died at the age of 93.
Mr Andrews, father of Ryedale councillor Paul Andrews, died in a Scarborough nursing home after a long career in the ministry.
Ordained in 1943 at Southwark Cathedral, he retired in 1986 from full-time ministry after serving in the Diocese of Lichfield at Shrewsbury and Stoke-on-Trent.
He moved to Scarborough with his wife, Amy, and later lived at Dulverton Hall, the home for retired clergy. He took services at the resort’s churches of St Martin-on-the-Hill and St Saviour’s.
Mr Andrews, a widower, leaves a son, Paul, and two grandchildren.
Dr Sentamu, in a letter to Coun Andrews said: “It is such cruel timing that means that your father never got to take part in the celebrations to mark the 70th annivesary of his ordination as a deacon.
“I know that his ministry and his company has been much appreciated through the years, not least since moving to Scarborough.”
