Scarborough castle under siege from vandals

VANDALS have attacked an historic North Yorkshire landmark in a “completely mindless act of criminal damage”.

Police are now appealing for information after vandals scaled Scarborough Castle and caused extensive damage to Roman stonework at the site, with those responsible also removing metal post caps and damaging sign posts.

Officers said the incident between 7pm on Saturday and 9am the following morning is the latest in a number of attacks on Scarborough Castle PC Alasdair McNeill, of Scarborough police, said: “It’s very sad that people feel the need to destroy something which has stood for many hundreds of years, is a landmark for the town and contributes to the culture and economy of the area.

“The sign posts can be repaired and replaced, but the roman ruins cannot. I urge anyone who has any information to phone the police as soon as possible on 101.”
