Father Benedict Webb dies, aged 92

A LONG-SERVING monk at one of North Yorkshire’s most famous abbeys has died at the age of 92.

Father Benedict Webb, who has been at Ampleforth since 1950, died peacefully on May 8, according to abbey officials. Originally from East Grinstead in Surrey, Brendan Webb, as he was known before joining the order, went to school at Ampleforth College, before studying medicine at Cambridge.

He then joined the Royal Navy, serving on the convoy escorts in the Atlantic, the Normandy landings, and in the Far East Fleet.

In September 1946 he was clothed at Ampleforth Abbey, taking the name ‘Benedict’ and making Solemn Vows in 1950. He was ordained a priest in 1953.

In 1956, he was appointed the first Housemaster of St Hugh’s House at Ampleforth College.

His funeral will be at Ampleforth Abbey on Wednesday at 11.30am.
