Mary Portas joins Malton supermarket row

TELEVISION retail guru Mary Portas has stepped into the row over controversial plans to build a supermarket in Malton.

Miss Portas, who published a major report in March into the state of Britain’s high streets, posted a message on Twitter following the publication of the open letter in the Daily Telegraph.

She tweeted: “Sat wondering how this is still happening. And if it’s too late for Malton to form town team so community has a voice.”

Ryedale District Council’s planning committee gave the go-ahead in March to sell part of Wentworth Street Car Park to Leeds firm GMI Holbeck.

Denys Townsend, chairman of Malton and Norton Business in Action, said: “Malton has had various town teams and the council pays no heed to them at all.”

Malton traders/landowners forget it's a council for the district and sick of people saying they speak for the community when no proper poll has been taken in the district e.g. like the one in Kirkbymoorside where 70% of the residents wanted a new supermarket. Do we need all these vain fashionistas to tell us what is right when they get basic facts wrong all the time e.g. missing the fact we will have more car park, and not realising the community is the main beneficiary from the car park sale and increased choice.

Last Saturday's Telegraph article was a travesty - describing Malton as a place with a population of 4000 and saying that half the population had signed the petition. The local shopping population is 5 times that figure, and I know people who signed the petition 3 times using different names. The open letter to the paper was signed by the usual suspects - many of whom do not live or shop in Malton. Then there were the signatures of local shop keepers, frightened of the competition, or a few narrow minded local councillors, frightened of change. We elect council members to make decisions on our behalf. This they did. We should not be ruled by a noisy mob with their own agenda and vested interest. These people are a minority pretending to represent the majority. They do not. Mary Portas? Selina Scott? Lord and Lady Dah de Dah? Who are these people campaigning to stop me buying cheaper petrol and groceries in my local town?
