5:33pm Friday 27th April 2012 in News
By Jennifer Bell, Crime reporter
TWO men have been arrested after a German national flag hanging outside a Malton bar was torn down and set alight near the town’s war memorial.
The local men, aged 19 and 20, have been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
The incident, outside the German-themed bar at the Mount Hotel in Yorkersgate, was captured on CCTV. It shows four youths making their way to the flagpole outside the bar and beginning to tear the flag down. Minutes later two of them can be seen walking down Yorkersgate holding the burning flag between them.
Bar owners Dagmar and Gunter Schwark said they were extremely distressed by the attack.
Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
