Volunteers needed to shape future of policing in North Yorkshire
9:16am Friday 27th April 2012 in News
VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help shape the future of policing in North Yorkshire and York.
The North Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel wants two people to serve as co-opted independent members for a four-year term from this summer.
Voters will go to the polls in November to elect a new Police And Crime Commissioner for the area covered by the North Yorkshire Police.
The commissioner will consult the panel on the plans and budget for policing, as well as the level of council tax and the appointment of a chief constable.
The panel will also provide checks and balances to the commissioner’s performance.
Neil Irving, North Yorkshire County Council’s assistant director, policy and partnerships, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to be involved from the start in new, very different arrangements for police governance and accountability.
“The role of a panel member will be an important and demanding one. The typical commitment is expected to average one day a month. “Meetings will be held at various locations around the county, and panel members will be reimbursed for travelling expenses. We would particularly welcome applications for people with experience in a paid or unpaid role in community safety, victim support, criminal justice, and other related issues.”
For details, visit nypartnerships.org.uk/pcp or phone 01609 536030.
The closing date for applications is Friday, June 1.

Neil Irving, North Yorkshire County Council’s assistant director, policy and partnerships will be on about £300 per eight hour day for his silly over titled role, him asking people to work for nothing seems a little off on that basis.
What the article doesn't tell you is who is going to select these volunteers. Elected politicians?
Also it appears that the volunteers get expenses only while the Commissioner gets about £75,000-is that fair and is it likely to attract the right sort of candidate? The role itself sounds like "snooping" on the Commissioner. This has not been properly thought out and is going to be expensive.

Not everything has to come down to getting paid, some people cae about their community and are willing to put the time and energy into it. There are thousands of people who do roles throughout the country voluntarily, just to help their community.
