Whitby lighthouse repairs could be delayed

REPAIRS to lighthouses in a North Yorkshire town could be delayed amid fears its historic piers are also decaying.

Stabilisation work on the east and west piers in Whitby may have to be carried out before any money is spent on restoring the Grade II-listed lighthouses, which are starting to lean and could cost about £200,000 to fix.

A report which will go before the Whitby Harbour Board next week said that even if the lighthouses were repaired, it would not secure their long-term future as the piers are also at risk.

A shame everything is falling apart. We must expect to have to rebuild all these ancient structures at some time or another. Even with the best of maintenance we cant expect them to last forever.
