New cycle parking in Newgate Market, York

Coun Dave Merrett locks his bike up in the new sheltered cycle parking in York’s Newgate Market Coun Dave Merrett locks his bike up in the new sheltered cycle parking in York’s Newgate Market

Cyclists now have more choice where to park their bikes in York city centre.

A new secure and sheltered cycle parking area has been created in Newgate Market.

It was set up by City of York Council, which has converted a row of empty trader stalls at the back of the market.

The row of cycle racks has room to park up to 20 bikes, which will be sheltered from the rain, or snow, as they are under the old trader stalls’ canopy, which has been retained. This new area of cycle parking is best accessed via the archway from Shambles and is monitored by nearby CCTV.

Coun Dave Merrett, the council’s cabinet member for city strategy, said: “Cycling in York is so popular that it is sometimes difficult to find cycle parking within the city centre, and racks are often full for much of the day. “The new racks are a great addition to the city’s cycle parking, and make good use out of an existing market stall.

“Being undercover and sheltered from the elements is an additional bonus.”

they can always find a bit of spare cash for a pet project.the amount of money spent on cycling related schemes by ycc in recent years could have gone towards something worthwhile.today in parliament the ultimate faux cyclist david cameron will call for greater protection for the nations peddlers.welcome to uk 2012.

To be fair, they look ok, and they are only are using what is already there!

RE: roskoboskovic

Thats what we get for having a council who's transport chief didn't drive for years! the next transport chief may well be a taxi driver and then we will see investment in taxi lanes... they will all look after themselves.

as for Cameron, he can get on his bike anytime he wants and take puppet boy Cleg with him!

does he realise that these peddlers he want to protect are killing our economy "or are they not the same peddlers?"

(Tongue in cheek)

"This new area of cycle parking is best accessed via the archway from Shambles..." That's right, direct them through one of the narrowest and most congested areas in the city centre.

More clutter in a narrow and congested part of York's city centre. For much of the working day cyclists will have to walk with their machines to get to these cycle racks because it's in the middle of a no cycle zone. What are the chances?

But the CCTV coverage will mean that the cycles can be issued with fixed penalty notices daily for being used in a pedestrian zone. a money spinner.

The area can be accessed by riding outside pedestrian core times, Within those times, wheeling a bike from eg Pavement will only take a minute. And isn't it amazing how many bikes can be fitted into the space which one parked car would occupy.

"This new area of cycle parking is best accessed via the archway from Shambles..." which is of course(if you know your YORK) the quickest and easiest way..
AND it is not "in the middle" of a no cycle zone, coppergate, picc

The row of 5 or 6 cycle racks take up the same space as my 7 seater car! but can we not turn this into a car Vs bike debate?

As a car driver I have already said that this is a good use of an unused facility. and a possible revenue collector for the council (as is stonebow/coppergate where cars are concerned)

It is actually very well placed, however it can sometimes be difficult getting through the market due to the amount of tourists, the same could be said for the shambles.

An idea could be to move the flower and mobile phone stalls from the parliament street part of the market and turn that into the same cycle parking and get rid of the ugly cycle racks from the square in the centre of york.

"It was set up by City of York Council, which has converted a row of empty trader stalls at the back of the market".

....And why are the trader stalls empty...because of the ridiculously high rental charges by YCC which are driving away traders. So instead of vibrant stalls for York City residents and tourists alike, we've got a bike rack! Are they charging to park a bike?

It is in the middle of a no-cycle zone. Newgate Market is a no cycle zone as are Parliament Street, Kings Court and The Shambles, which surround it. It's a bit like saying you can drive on a traffic island because it's in the middle of the road.

I just wish YCC can get their act together as regards to cycle park provision in the city. A rack for 20 cycles in a pedestrian area that is usually crowded with shoppers (at peak times) is a little pathetic. Perhaps it's been built and paid for by a select few cycling workers in the immediate vacinity? I just wish there was a space as comprehensive as York Railway Station. Surely a better option would be to use some car parking spaces in a large area; out of the way of pedestrians (such as Cliffords Tower Car Park) and utilise this space for a temporary central bike space?
Finding a space in the city centre to lock your bike up is only a problem on Saturdays and the odd Sunday in the summer months.
