The accident happened at 10am on Westgate in Pickering, near the Sun Inn police said.
A 58-year-old man who was driving the silver Honda Accord was pronounced dead at the scene, a police spokesman has said.
The road was closed as officers investigated the collision and allowed the vehicle to be recovered, but it reopened at 1.50pm.
Traffic Constable Ian Barratt, of Malton Police, said: “We are trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the collision and I am urging anyone with information to come forward.
“If you saw the incident itself or the vehicle prior to the collision, please contact the police with information.”
