Scarborough mayors may lose civic car

FUTURE mayors in a North Yorkshire town will have to drive themselves or take a taxi to events if plans to axe their civic car and save £20,000 are approved.

Scarborough Borough Council is being recommended not to renew the contract for the vehicle when it expires in May.

The authority may also replace the annual mayor-making dinner with a smaller lunch event, as well as reducing “civic entertainments” for councillors and visiting civic leaders.

The authority’s cabinet will consider the proposals next week after most residents who took part in a public consultation said they wanted to see its £88,586 civic budget reduced.

Coun Dilys Cluer, who chairs the council’s mayoralty task group, said in a report: “The mayor would be required to drive themselves to functions where this proved to be practicable and reasonable and a taxi service or hired service is used for driver functions where necessary.”
