Clues to North Yorkshire heritage published

NEW clues to the history of North Yorkshire have been published on the internet after they were unearthed by local archaeology groups.

Details of more than 2,500 newly-recorded sites, as well as fresh information on those which were already known about, have been placed online by North Yorkshire County Council.

Among the projects are the “lost orchids of Nidderdale”; previously-unknown hut circles indicating an Iron Age settlement at North Stainley, near Ripon; and work carried out on a range of sites in and around Northallerton. The record can be found at heritagegateway.org.uk.

“The record is a fantastic resource which helps people delve into the story of North Yorkshire,” said Coun Chris Metcalfe, executive member for the council’s historic environment team.

“A wealth of information is available at the click of a mouse, and we are extremely grateful to all the groups and individuals around North Yorkshire who contribute their knowledge and findings.”
