THE biggest housing development in Malton for decades has sparked fears for traffic problems in the area.
Taylor Wimpey wants to built 262 family homes in the Brough Road area, but members of Malton Town Council say they are concerned that the scheme will potentially encroach on to the historic Outgang Lane, a Roman road.
The mayor, Coun Jason Fitzgerald- Smith, said the council should have a meeting with the county council highways department to ascertain its plans for the future road system for Malton and the impact the housing development might have.
He said: “We need a meeting with the planners and the developers because this is a major development.
We have got to get it right.”
Coun Paul Andrews said he was concerned about the number of cars generated by the development if the proposed supermarket goes ahead in the Wentworth Street car park.
Coun Joan Lawrence believed the development would necessitate the building of a new primary school because those in Malton and Norton were already full.
Coun David Lloyd-Williams, said: “We need answers,” adding that a final decision on the scheme, which already has outline approval from Ryedale House, should be deferred until the various issues were resolved.
