A 1940s Land Girl, The Joker and Wonder Woman all appeared at the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy competition held in Norton.
About 200 hairdressing and beauty therapy students at The Academy Hair and Beauty Training College competed for places in categories, including Classic 1940s, Blow Dry, Bridal, Face and Body Painting and Evening Style.
The winners included Kayshia Simpson, Jade Coole and Sophie Bunton, from Norton College, Molly Fairweather, from Goodys Kirkbymoorside, Claudia Lester, from Liberty, Chloe Train, from Goodys Norton, and Rebecca Swallow, Judith Porter and Jemma Utley, from The Academy.
The 2012 Competition Student of the Year went to Carrie Ann Nicholson.
Those who were placed go through to the second round of competitions at Gateshead. The national finals will be held in Blackpool later in the year.
Academy Director Lindsay Burr said: “I would like to thank our guest judge Beth King, owner of The Hair shop, Pickering.
“Judging was tough as today’s competition work is fantastic and students have competed to a very high standard. This is a result of hard work by our students and is a credit to all the tutors.
“Competition work is a different discipline to salon work and requires a huge amount of skill.”
