A NEW book highlighting the history of All Saints’ Church in Kirkbymoorside is being launched this week.
The book has been written by members of the town’s history group who have been involved in a number of publications looking at Kirkbymoorside’s past.
Their latest work incorporates a previous history of the church covering its ancient history and brings it up to the present day with the arrival of new vicar Mark Brosnan.
Louise Mudd said the book charted the many changes churches had undergone over the years.
“In the early days people were very much lectured if they did not attend church whereas that attitude has now changed,” she said.
“We have also looked at the history of the church house, which is now the library and the Sunday School.”
Louise said All Saints had seen more than 40 vicars, including Rev John Rowlandson who was described as being ‘weak in body’.
“It appeared he had been a missionary in India in the 1840s and had suffered from a number of tropical diseases,” she said.
“There was also the Rev Gray who published a sermon in 1836 basically telling the local residents off for not coming to church.”
The book also includes photographs and memories of locals.
“Different members of the groups have been involved in the book which has taken us about a year to complete,” Louise said.
Copies of A History of All Saints Church, priced £15, will be available at the launch on Saturday, at the Children In Distress shop in Kirkbymoorside, local newsagents and bookshops.
