Football academy kicks off at Malton School

Malton School is introducing a Football Academy in partnership with York City in the Community and Pickering Town Football Club.

Young players will be offered the chance to combine academic studies with a full-time training and games programme which will closely mirror successful schemes run by schools in partnership with Watford FC, Wycombe Wanderers FC and Bath City FC.

Students joining the Academy programme can choose to study BTEC Level 2 in Sport – equivalent to four GCSEs, BTEC Level 3 in Sporting Excellence – equivalent to three A-levels, or the traditional A-level Physical Education course alongside three other A-levels offered at Malton School.

Sports teacher Tom Green said: “This is a great opportunity for students to be part of a squad that will have set training sessions during the week and competitive games every Wednesday afternoon, alongside achieving academic qualifications to suit their needs.

“The squad will have a team entered in the British College Sport League as well as in English Schools FA and North Yorkshire cup competitions.”

Mr Green added that the programme would be supported by strong links to football clubs and would complement, not detract from, the students’ participation in a club side.

Students will work with Steve Brown, the Pickering Town 1st team coach, and Danny Palmer, the Pickering Town Under 19’s manager.

“Those enrolled in the Academy will complete the FA Level One Coaching Course and will then be able to access valuable coaching opportunities to gain experience themselves if they wish,” Mr Green added.
