Winning words for North Yorkshire poets

TWO poets from York and North Yorkshire have triumphed in a prestigious national poetry competition.

Pat Borthwick, who lives near Hovingham, was the winner of the Keats-Shelly Prize for Poetry for her poem Lord Leighton Brings Arabia To Holland Park.

She is a a former writer in resident with City of York Libraries and has had three full-length collections of poetry published.

Third place went to Carole Bromley, who teaches creative writing at the University of York.

Her poem, Tom Makes His Mark, was inspired by an inscription in the East Window of York Minster and the first draft was written in the cathedral. Her first full-length poetry collection is published this month.

The annual competition is aimed at encouraging talented poets to write poem inspired by the Romantic movement and relevant to today. This year, the theme was glass. The winners received their awards at a ceremony in London chaired by novelist Penelope Lively.

Two, tragic poets and both with Italian endings!! Shelley's stormy life, also had York connections. Well done to both of these poet/writers, who by winning the competition, clearly did not have their names "writ in water!!" Perhaps, an autumnal theme for the next competition - as John Keats in particular, was inspired by nature and the world about him.
