THE highlight of a year of celebrations takes place next week at Malton Methodist Church.

Members have been marking the church’s bicentenary anniversary with a series of events which will continue until the end of the year.

However, the main event takes place over the weekend of June 24-27 with an anniversary service and flower festival.

Roger Hadfield, who is organising the 200th anniversary celebrations, said that although there was no exact date as to when the church was established, historical records show the building was built in Saville Street in 1811.

“To mark the anniversary we decided to hold events throughout the year, starting in February with a combined service involving all the churches in Malton and Norton,” he said.

“The high point of the celebrations will be the anniversary service and flower festival and the theme for this year is The Fruits of the Spirit, which will be reflected both in the flower displays and in the Sunday worship.”

Mr Hadfield said the flower festival was being organised by members of Malton and District Flower Club with a preview evening on Thursday, June 23 at 7pm.

The anniversary service is on Sunday, June 26 at 10.30am, led by the Rev Alison Tomlin, president of the Methodist Conference, and all are welcome to attend.

“Following the celebration weekend, events will continue until the end of the year,“ Mr Hadfield said.

The next event will be a Ryedale Festival service with the Rev David Emison at the end of July.

Mr Hadfield said the church had a loyal congregation and was also used throughout the week by a variety of different groups including mother and toddler groups and choirs who used the building to rehearse.

“There will be some spectacular displays of flowers over the celebration weekend and we hope people will drop in and have a look as well as joining us for refreshments,” he added.

Tickets for the flower festival preview evening are available from Malton Tourist Information Centre and members of the Methodist Church and flower club.

Admission to the celebration weekend is free and the church will be open for visitors 10am-4pm on June 24, 25 and 27 and 2pm-4pm on June 26.
