Malton is to stage a repeat of last year’s successful Roman Festival.

One of the organisers, Paul Andrews, said the event, being organised by Malton and Norton Events Group on Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24, will see legions of Roman soldiers re-enacting scenes which would have been seen in Malton 1,600 years ago.

This year marks the 16th centenary of the Roman evacuation of the province, and enthusiasts re-enacting the 6th and 9th legions will be accompanied by a troop of fourth century soldiers and a squadron of Roman cavalry.

“It promises to be a good family show,” he said.

The wide programme of events will include Roman soldiers marching in full military uniform from the Forum to the Derventio barracks, escorting Miss Derventio.

There will also be demonstrations of living history, including weapons, gladiatorial combats, cooking and a mock battle between Romans and Britons.

Other attractions will include a display by Roman cavalry and a Syrian archer who will demonstrate his skills at firing arrows while riding his horse.

There will be opportunities for volunteers to learn how to use Roman weapons, including a pilum target contest, opportunities for children to dress in Roman armour and march around the arena under the supervision of the duty centurion, a heritage tent featuring Roman history and culture, which will feature such famous personalities like Julius Caesar, Nero and Hadrian.

In addition, the weekend programme will see a collection of recent archaeological finds which have never been seen before.

Coun Andrews said: “Last year the public were amazed to see well-preserved examples of a centurion’s shoe, a child’s shoe, Roman jewellery and Crambeck ware. There will also be some original Roman pottery which needs cleaning, and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to touch, hold and wash these.”

Guided tours of the Roman Fort site will be given by an archaeologist and there will be a Roman military camp with soldiers and their families living as they would have done when on campaign. Roman food will also be available.

Coun Andrews said: “This year’s show will take place early in the school holidays and is timed to coincide with the Ryedale Festival and hopefully, warm weather. It will be an exceptional and varied spectacular which will appeal to people of all ages.”

Pitches will be set out for traders’ stalls and sponsorship deals are available on request.
