THe family and friends of vanished York chef Claudia Lawrence are inviting people who have missing loved ones and those who wish to support them to a vigil at York Minster.

Next Sunday, February 27, is the date of Claudia’s 37th birthday and her father, Peter Lawrence, wishes to mark the day with a meditative event, A Vigil For The Missing.

Those attending will gather in St Helen’s Square from 2pm before an informal procession along Stonegate and Deangate, entering the Minster through the West Door at about 2.45pm.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, and the Dean, Keith Jones, will greet the procession at the Minster door and speak at the vigil which will take place at the High Altar.

Everyone present will then have the opportunity to light a candle for all those missing and their families.

Martin Dales, Peter Lawrence’s friend and spokesman, said: “The vigil was Peter’s idea as he is a regular member of the Minster congregation.

“Last year, an event was held in St Sampson’s Square, which was very moving.

“However, this year Peter wanted something more meditative and was very happy when the archbishop and the dean agreed to a vigil at the Minster.

“The archbishop has been a great support to Peter over the last two years.

“Peter, the archbishop and the dean are all very keen that people should come, whether they have missing relatives or because they wish to support families going through this trauma.”

Claudia, a chef at the University of York, has been missing since March 18, 2009.

Mr Dales said: “In the absence of any evidence of a crime being committed, one can only live in hope that she is alive somewhere and that is what’s keeping everyone going.”
