THE revived Malton and Norton Folk Festival, due to be held in March, is to become a landmark event in the towns’ calendar.

Rowena Garner, who is organising the two-day event with her husband David, a former director of the Eastbourne Folk Festival, and musician Nick Thompson, said that following last year’s festival there had been keen interest in staging another.

The festival ran successfully in the 1970s and 1980s, but then folded, she said.

However, with the large number of folk singers, musicians and Morris dancers in Ryedale, it was felt the event should be revived.

Performers booked for the festival, which will take place on March 18 and 19, include Trio Threlfall, The Hall Brothers, Two Black Sheep and a Stallion, Wendy Arrowsmith and Holly Taymar.

Several of the acts are from North Yorkshire, said Rowena, while others are from as far as Lancashire.

They will be appearing at The Blue Ball Inn and Suddaby’s Crown Hotel, while other venues are to be used for workshops, sing-a-rounds and musicians’ sessions. In addition, there will teams of Morris dancers appearing in Malton Market Place on the Saturday.

“We aim to keep the event running and making it a key part of the annual entertainment programme in Malton and Norton,” said Rowena.
