A MUSEUM which has been run by the community for more than 40 years is appealing for more volunteers.

Beck Isle Museum was set up in 1967 by a group of enthusiasts using just three rooms of a Georgian Grade II listed building in Pickering.

Today, the museum covers 27 rooms and galleries displaying thousands of objects and artefacts chronicling local history.

Rodge Dowson, chairman of the Beck Isle Museum management committee, said the museum was also involved in outreach work in the community.

“Slide shows about the life and works of Pickering-born photographer Sydney Smith are delivered by museum curator Gordon Clitheroe, while the Oral History Group also does reminiscence work and gives talks to groups and schools,” he added.

“As a volunteer-run and managed charity, the museum is actively growing and we welcome new volunteers,” he said.

“Some of the many varied tasks include front of house, research, costume care, photography, archives and restoration projects.”

Mr Dowson said the museum had achieved the nationally-recognised accreditation standard, helped by the hard work of volunteers.

“People’s experiences, interests and skills can all be beneficial to helping us,” he added.

“If anyone has some volunteer time to give we would be pleased to hear from them. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills and give something back to the heritage of this wonderful area.”
