RYEDALE councillor Howard Keal has stepped down as leader of the council’s Liberal Democrat Group after four years.

Coun Keal handed over the role to Amotherby ward councillor Jane Wilford at a meeting of the group this week.

He said it had been a privilege to lead the group and also fight for the parliamentary seat but felt it was a good time to ‘hand on the baton’ of leader.

“A lot of projects on which I have campaigned with the group are now happening and successes of which I am proud have included working with local people and John Taylor to win the fight to build Malton Sports Centre.

“I’m also happy that we gained agreement for £800,000 to be put into helping protect Pickering from flooding, although more still needs to be done.”

Coun Keal added that he would go on working for local people on the district council.

“I know Jane will do an excellent job in taking on the leadership role and the Lib Dem group will continue to work hard for local people.

“I must also mention that I’m especially grateful to my wife Di and our three daughters for bearing with my passion for politics. I have to admit that posting leaflets is probably not the most exciting family outing for a weekend.”
