ONE man was killed and another left in hospital after separate crashes on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough.

A 26-year-old man from Scarborough was killed when his car left the road at Staxton and hit a tree near the Merry Lees caravan park.

The accident happened at 5.50am yesterday and the road was closed in both directions until shortly before noon. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and had not been named by police last night.

In a second incident, three cars were involved in a smash on the eastbound side of the A64 near the village of Rillington.

Police said one man was taken to Scarborough Hospital, but was not believed to have been seriously injured. The incident, which happened at 3pm, saw one lane of the road closed for an hour while a recovery operation took place.
