Petition over building of new Tesco in Whitby

CAMPAIGNERS presented a petition against the building of a new supermarket to council leaders in Scarborough.

The petition, which contained 3,712 signatures, was in protest against plans from Tesco to build a new £40 million supermarket on a 15-acre site in High Stakesby, Whitby.

Whitby Residents Against Tesco said the development would cause traffic problems and would ruin the character of the town.

It said: “The town council was unanimously against the plans for Tesco. We went to Scarborough because we thought people should know how much we are against this.

A final decision is expected to be made by Scarborough Borough Council on July 29.
