Captain Paul Southern, of Scarborough, receives the Lord-Lieutenant Certificate, one of the highest honours in the forces, ranking next to the MBE, for his contribution and dedication to the reserve forces and cadet units in the area, from Colonel E York, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

Capt Southern, a voluntary adult instructor for the Combined Cadet Force at Scarborough College, received the Lord-Lieutenant Certificate for his contribution and dedication to the reserve forces and cadet organisations of the county.

Capt Southern’s involvement with the Cadet Association spans more than 37 years, beginning with the Leeds University Officers’ Training Corps in 1973, followed by service with the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers in Germany a year later, before transferring to the Army Cadet Force in 1976.

In 1980 Capt Southern took up a teaching post in Bermuda, serving with the Bermuda Cadet Corps before returning to the UK and in 1994 joining the Scarborough College Combined Cadet Force where he has given outstanding service over the last 15 years, becoming the College’s first Cadet Vocational Qualification (CVQ) officer responsible for BTEC qualification training.
