ONE of North Yorkshire’s most famous tourist attractions has won a heritage award for how it is looking to the future by preserving its past.
Castle Howard’s conservation management plan was drawn up to help find money to fund the restoration and upkeep of its 200 listed buildings and monuments, as well as its listed parks and gardens. The estate was honoured in the heritage category of the Royal Town and Country Planning Institute planning awards.
Judges said: “Castle Howard has successfully implemented a dynamic management plan which is rooted in the estate’s significance, values and special qualities as a historic place.” They said it was “a model for other plans”.
Earlier this week, The Press reported how Castle Howard’s owners may look at building housing on some parts of the estate to fund the restoration work.
Simon Howard said: “With much of Castle Howard built in the 18th century, we are finding that a lot of our restoration projects need addressing at the same time.
“This brings with it the unprecedented challenge of seeking a substantial increase in revenue in order that we can carry out this important work. The award acknowledges the collaborative approach we took in developing the plan, as well as our dedication to retain the integrity and special qualities of the estate for all who live and work here.”
