Fire chief sets out missions for Ryedale

COUNCIL chiefs will get an insight into the work of the fire service in Ryedale at a meeting next week.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service fire chief, group manager Mal Austwick, will speak to members of the county council’s Ryedale area committee on Wednesday about the work done by crews in the last quarter of 2009.

Councillors are set to hear about an incident which involved a house fire in Charlton Place, Scagglethorpe when two people had to be treated after suffering smoke inhalation and a car smash at Whitewell Quarry in Norton when a car crashed and came to rest on its side with one person trapped inside. No one was killed in either incident.

Mr Austwick will also report on fire prevention and safety, which, has taken up a large part of the brigade’s time.

The report covers the last quarter of 2009 – from October 1 – December 31 and shows that during October and November 147 smoke alarms were fitted and 30 community fire safety talks were given along with talks in schools about the dangers of Bonfire Night.

Committee members will hear how students at both Norton College and Lady Lumley’s School heard from the parents of a teenager who died just weeks after passing his driving test.

The message was backed up by the fire service along with the police, Great North Air Ambulance and drug and alcohol awareness teams.

Forthcoming initiatives include a training exercise to be held early next month at one of the district’s historic houses.

Few details are available, but the exercise will involve six fire engines and up to 35 firefighters with water supplies and breathing apparatus being tested.

Speeding and motorcycle safety initiatives will also be held in spring in an attempt to further bring down road deaths.
