YOUNG children in Ryedale are being offered the swine flu vaccine.
Derwent Practice in Norton has started writing to families with children aged over six months and under five to have their child vaccinated.
This group of children is in the second phase of the swine flu vaccination programme.
Dr Phil Kirby, associate director of public health at NHS North Yorkshire and York, said: “Children under five are more likely than other groups to be hospitalised if they become ill with swine flu. Young children also have high rates of admission to critical care.
“While getting immunised is a personal choice, I would advise all parents whose children are offered the vaccine to take it up. The vaccine has been rigorously tested and any side effects are usually very mild,” he added.
“If you have any concerns about receiving the vaccine, you can talk to your GP or practise nurse.”
