Malton councillors hit out over delays to roof repairs at the old Town Hall

MALTON Town councillors have hit out at Ryedale District Council over delays in the completion of restoration work on the old Town Hall in the Market Place.

The building, which now houses Malton Museum, has been under-going roof repair work and as a result steel hoarding has been put around part of the landmark building.

Town clerk Mike Skehan said the councillors had labelled the delay “unacceptable” after being told by Ryedale House that the roof work is not expected to be completed until April or May. They have now called for the work to be speeded up because of what they describe as ‘unsightly hoarding’.

* The town authority is looking to let part of the cemetery chapel which is no longer used for its original purpose, as a chapel of rest. The listed building is used a store by the town council but councillors have been told there is already one expression of interest in part of it being utilised.

* The Christmas lights displays in Malton and Norton have been given a £2,000 boost by the town council, following Norton Town Council’s decision to put money into the scheme. Malton’s switch-on will be on November 27. Meanwhile plans are being made to stage a Victorian weekend on December 12 and 13, councillors were told.

* Grants of £500 are being given to Malton Museum and the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Championships which are being held at the Milton Rooms next month. In addition, £750 is being given to Ryedale Citizens Advice Bureau, and £600 to the Malton old people’s Christmas party fund.

* St Catherine’s Hospice’s annual “Light up a Life” tree is to have a new site this year. The previous site, near Malton railway station, is no longer available, so the tree will be set in the Market Place next to the Town Hall and Rebecca Howard will switch on the lights on December 1.

* St Michael’s Parish Church is set to be floodlit, after planning permission was granted for four ground-based lights around the building.
